Choosing sugars
There are many different types of sugar used in beauty and skincare recipes. Sugars with the smallest crystal size are best in products for the face and for sensitive skin. Regular white sugar is often used to make body, hand, and foot scrubs.

Regular white sugar (1):

This particular type of sugar is what is commonly found at your supermarket and used in home baking. The crystal size in regular white sugar is usually graded as “fine” and is ideal for crafting recipes that are meant for body scrubs, hand polishes, and foot exfoliators. Regular white sugar should not be used in recipes for the face or used by those with delicate skin.

Coarse sugar (2):

A white sugar that has a larger crystal size than regular white sugar, and is very coarse. This particular sugar should only be used in hand and foot treatments.

Superfine white sugar (3):

Also known as baker’s or castor sugar, this has a smaller crystal size than regular white sugar and is good for making skincare recipes that will be used on the face and body.

Confectioner’s sugar (4):

Also known as powdered sugar, this is an ultra-fine sugar that has a very small crystal size. This is the best sugar choice when creating scrubs for the face and for those with delicate skin.

Turbinado sugar (5):

A brown sugar with a large crystal size that makes an excellent addition to body scrubs. It is light brown in color and has a molasses-like an aroma that makes a sweet scrubbing treat. Avoid use on delicate skin and the face.

Evaporated cane juice (6):

This sugar is light brown in color and has a molasses-like aroma, and is well used in body care recipes. Avoid using on delicate skin and the face.

Brown sugar (light and dark) (7):

This is perfect for crafting body scrubs. If you are using this particular type of sugar on the face or on delicate skin, then use a gentle pressure when exfoliating to avoid irritation.

Muscovado sugar (8):

A very dark brown sugar with coarse, large crystals that makes a great addition to foot and hand scrubs.
