Choosing salts

There are several types of salt used in bath and body treatments. From relaxing and soothing bath soaks to skin-polishing salt scrubs, turn simple salts into extraordinary spa secrets.

Dead Sea salt (1):

A pure white salt that is harvested from the Dead Sea in Israel. This particular salt has a very high mineral content and can be purchased either in course grade, which is perfect for bath salt recipes or in fine grade, which is wonderful for body scrubs.

Himalayan bath salt (2):

This red-, pink-, and white-freckled salt is mined from within the Himalayan Mountains. When purchasing this particular type of salt, choose an extra-coarse grade for making scented potpourri with essential oils, small to medium grade for bath salts, and fine grade for making salt scrubs.

Sea salt (3):

This is a white salt that is similar in texture to regular table salt and collected from evaporated ocean waters around the world. This economically priced salt is great for making salt scrubs and bath bombs. Choose extra small grade for most body scrub applications. Perfume pedi

TRY IT

If you have rough and dry elbows and knees, mix a handful of fine sea salt with a small amount of body soap and rub over your skin to exfoliate and smooth.

Gray sea salt (4):

A light gray salt that is harvested from the island of Noirmoutier, near Brittany, in France. It is sold under the trademark Breton™ Grey Sea Salt and is moderate to expensively priced. This particular salt has a very high mineral content. Purchase fine or velvet grade for face and body scrubs and course grade for bath treatments.

Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) (5):

A white salt that is often used for creating relaxing bath soaks and calming foot baths. Many people find that soaking in an Epsom salt bath helps to soothe muscle cramps and ease stress. It can also be used to exfoliate the skin and help wash away foot odor. When purchasing this particular type of salt, choose medium to coarse grade for bath and foot soaks and extra fine for body scrubs.
Note: If you have diabetes and/or any health concerns, speak with your physician first before using Epsom salts.
